BMI Calculator

Enter height and weight to get your BMI, its WHO category, and the healthy weight range for your height.

BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Not medical advice.

How it works

BMI is weight divided by height squared (kg/m²) — a 19th-century formula that survives because it's a decent quick screen at the population level. The imperial version multiplies by 703 to convert units. Treat the category as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict: fitness, muscle mass, age, and where weight is carried all matter more than the single number.

FAQ

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not very — BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so muscular people often read as 'overweight' while being lean. It's designed as a population screening tool. For individuals, waist measurement and body-fat percentage add important context.

What are the WHO categories?

Underweight below 18.5, normal weight 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, and obese 30 and above. Some countries use slightly different cut-offs (several Asian health agencies use 23 as the overweight threshold).

What's a healthy BMI?

The WHO range is 18.5–24.9, which this calculator translates into a weight range for your height. Where you feel and function best within (or near) that range varies from person to person.
