How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% for table service is standard, 18% being a common default. In much of Europe 5–10% or rounding up is plenty, and in Japan tipping isn't customary at all. When in doubt locally, 10% is rarely wrong outside the US.
How does round-up work?
Each person's share is rounded up to the next whole currency unit so nobody deals with coins. The calculator then shows the effective tip percentage the rounded amount works out to — it's usually a point or two above what you picked.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention says pre-tax, and etiquette guides agree — though in practice most people tip on the total because that's the number at the bottom of the bill. The difference is small; pick one and don't overthink it.
